Doors to the caucus will open at 11:00 a.m. on April 19th for check-in. All participants at the caucus shall sign a standardized Caucus Participation Form stating that he or she is a Democrat, does not intend to support any candidate who is opposed to a Democratic nominee in the next general election, believes in the principles of the Democratic Party, and is a registered voter in Grayson County. At 12:00 noon the doors to the caucus will be closed and no person may complete a form and participate in the caucus after that time with the exception of those persons standing in line at noon.
In the event that only one person files for each delegate or alternate position, the caucus will be cancelled. In this event the chair will publicly announce the cancellation of the caucus and proclaim the individuals properly filed as the duly nominated delegates and alternates.

Susie Dixon Garner, Democratic candidate for the 5th District House of
Delegates, will be there as well.

Garner, who is a native of Galax, has the experience and expertise to be an outstanding delegate. She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Emory University in Atlanta, and earned her master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She served 12 years on the Galax City School Board, and currently serves on the boards of Wytheville Community College and the Crossroads Institute. As a professional, Garner is a certified pubic accountant and owns her own accounting firm, Susie Dixon Garner & Co., where she and her husband John have served the Twin County region for many years.

In Garner’s speech yesterday, she stressed the need to enhance economic development through a number of ways, such as infrastructural improvements (water, sewer, power, broadband Internet), properly funded public education, appropriately and financially supported transportation projects, (specifically Highway 58), and incentives for businesses to locate in the 5th District. She also stressed the unique advantage our region has in attracting tourism dollars:

“Nobody’s going to outsource the New River, Whitetop Mountain, or Hungry Mother State Park. We must determine the best way to preserve and enhance these resources while at the same time, use them to our advantage. Tourism, in conjunction with developing new, high-tech jobs and expanding our economy through small entrepreneurial ventures is a formula for success.”

This presentation will be shown in Galax in the atrium
at CrossRoads Center,1117 East Stuart Drive
(the former Lowe’s building on the opposite side
of the street just before Wal-Mart as you drive
east from Galax). A DVD projector and large
screen will be used for viewing. The CrossRoads
catererwill set up a cash bar for coffee, hot tea
and deserts. Following the film,at 9:00 p.m., a
conference call with Al Gore will be made. At this
time, I do not have details on this call.

There will be no charge at the door,
however a donation will be requested
to cover printing costs only.

This past Saturday the Grayson County Democratic Committee opened its offical headquarter office in downtown Independence at 110 Courthouse Avenue. Pictured above is Senator Roscoe Reynolds of Martinsville with residents of Grayson County taking part in the ribbon cutting celebration.
