Republicans want big govt to dictate medical decisions

January 2015

Republicans in Congress want big government to dictate medical decisions.

On Tuesday, the new Congress was sworn in with Republicans in complete control of Congress for the first time since 2006. And what did they do on their very first day?

Introduce legislation to ban abortion nationwide after 20 weeks.1

This bill is the anti-choice movement’s latest favorite strategy to attack abortion rights. Similar bans have passed in 12 states so far–with tragic consequences for women facing severe second trimester complications.2

After the last election, it’s going to be a huge fight to keep the bill off the president’s desk. But we can do it by getting just a handful of senators who are on the fence to vote our way.

While abortions after 20 weeks are rare, they’re desperately important in cases of severe fetal abnormalities and other heartbreaking second trimester complications.

Take for instance the experience of Danielle Deaver. She and her husband were “over the moon” about her pregnancy–but when her water broke after just 22 weeks, doctors told them that her baby could not survive.3

Because she lived in a state with a ban on abortion after 20 weeks, the doctors would not induce labor. She had to wait to get sick or for the baby to die inside her.

This isn’t pro-life. It’s not even humane. It’s simply right-wing politicians trying to control women’s bodies.

Thanks for all you do.
