Of the 17.7 million registered voters in Texas, only 4.4 million voted for Greg Abbott. That’s one in four. Among registered voters in Texas, 8.1 million voted and 9.6 million did not.

That’s the problem right there. Of the 9.6 million registered voters who were unable to vote this time, if less than 10% of them had voted for Beto, he would have won.

In Texas, 45.7% of the 17.7 million registered voters cast ballots in the 2022 midterm election.

Recommendations

Texas Democratic leaders need to become aggressive about making voting easier. There are several ways we can do this.

Local county officials, especially election committees, can be badgered into opening all polling locations during early voting. In Grayson County, that would increase early voting locations from 5 to 23.

Local county officials, especially election committees, can be badgered into opening early voting on the weekend before the election. And extend Sunday hours.

Lobby state officials to pass legislation making voting by mail easier.
  – Eliminate the requirement of filling in extra blanks. Just sign and return your ballot.
  – Eliminate the age requirement (being over 65); ie, institute no-excuse vote by mail.

Cities with large urban areas can increase voting with drive-through voting locations and 24-hour voting. The state legislature would have to pass new laws allowing both these options, since Republicans outlawed them last year.
