The Voting Rights Act of 1965, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, is the signature legislation that helped to restore the right to vote guaranteed by the 14th and 15th Amendments. The Voting Rights Act has been called the single most effective piece of civil rights legislation ever passed by Congress.
In recent years, the Voting Rights Act has come under attack from those who want to turn back the clock and place burdensome restrictions on voting. On February 27, 2013, the Supreme Court will be hearing a case from Shelby County, Alabama, in which opponents of the Voting Rights Act are trying to strike down a key section of the law—Section 5. Section 5 is the heart of the act, and a powerful tool to protect voting rights. In Section 5, states with a history of voter suppression are required to run any changes they want to make to their voting process by the Department of Justice for approval before those processes can be implemented.
Let’s show the Supreme Court that we love the Voting Rights Act and we think it should be kept intact to protect the right to vote for ALL Americans.

That’s why I signed a petition to U.S. Supreme Court, which says:
“Section 5 of the VRA is critical to protecting the voting rights of all Americans. Recent legislative attempts to suppress the vote have proven that Section 5 is needed now more than ever. Save Section 5 and keep the VRA intact!”
