Black History Month, Feb 2023

Grayson United and the Historical Marker Committee of the Sherman Riot of 1930 present a Sankofa Journey, Saturday, February 4 at 2 pm.

Sherman had a very prosperous and unique Black business district, prior to it being burned to the ground by an angry white mob in 1930. Sankofa means, ” It is not forbidden to look back, in order to move forward”. Our aim is to continue to educate and bring light to this once significant area.

This is a walking tour, where we stop at 7 significant locations and give a brief historical overview of it’s significance in 1930. One of them being the Home of Civil rights attorney William J Durham, who strategized Brown -vs- The Board of Education with Thurgood Marshall.

The journey begins at 200 E Mulberry St for a tour through the Historic Black Business District to Downtown Sherman. Church buses are provided for those not able to walk.  MAP

Please join us. February 4, 2023 at 2:00 pm at 200 E. Mulberry Street, close to downtown Sherman.

Sherman Community Players presents “Permanent Collection” by Thomas Gibbons during three weekends of February.  This show offers a searing examination of racial politics that asks how much space — literally and figuratively — the white world gives to African Americans. What is the cost of failing to view the world through anothers’ eyes?
